Mountcastle Quarry

This former quarry has in the past won a conservation award, and was turned into a reserve called Howe Nature Park and Edensmuir Loch.  Following a change of ownership, it was closed down, leaving a sadly-neglected large bird hide and many abandoned picnic tables.  In 2021, parts of the site were opened to the public as 'Eden Springs Country Park', managed primarily for anglers.  The loch attracts wildfowl and a few waders;  the presence of anglers, especially those in boats, are likely to reduce the wildfowl.  The site is excellent for butterflies and hoverflies.  There are two main stretches of water.
